While the dog may be “man’s best friend,” they are not always friendly to delivery drivers. Thousands of delivery drivers experience dog bites each year. Even the most well-behaved dogs can act unpredictably, especially if they feel scared or protective. By following a few safety tips, you can help protect yourself and stay safe while working.
Before You Approach a Home
Watch Unrestrained Dogs: If there’s a loose dog, keep an eye on it the whole time you’re on the property. Look for signs of fear or aggression, like growling or a stiff body, and keep your distance.
Make Your Presence Known: Honk your horn, knock, or say “Hello” loudly so the dog knows you’re there. This helps avoid surprising the dog, which could make it aggressive.
Don’t Startle Dogs: Try to make noise before getting close to the house. A startled dog might react by biting.
While Delivering a Package
Ask the Customer to Restrain Their Dog: If the dog is loose and the customer is home, politely ask them to secure the dog before you approach.
Avoid Petting the Dog: Even if the dog seems friendly, don’t try to pet it. Unfamiliar contact can make dogs feel threatened.
Block Outward-Swinging Doors: Use your foot or shoulder to block doors that swing outward to prevent a dog from knocking you over.
If a Dog Becomes Aggressive
Stay Calm: Do not run away, as this can make the dog chase you. Stand still and avoid staring directly at the dog, as it may see this as a threat.
Use an Object to Protect Yourself: If the dog attacks, place your bag, jacket, or anything you’re carrying between you and the dog.
After a Bite
If a dog bites you, follow these steps:
Clean the Wound: Wash the bite with soap and water. Cover it with a clean bandage.
Seek Medical Attention: Go to a doctor if the bite is deep, shows signs of infection (redness, swelling, pus), or if the dog’s vaccination status is unknown.
Report the Bite: If you don’t know if the dog has been vaccinated or it seems sick, report the incident to animal control or the police and your employer.
Never assume a dog won’t bite—dogs can be unpredictable. If you ever feel unsafe, prioritize your safety. Don’t proceed with the delivery until you’re sure it’s safe.
