About the Indianapolis 500

The Indianapolis 500 has a rich history dating back to the inaugural running more than 100 years ago in 1911. People from all over the world take up residence in Indianapolis for the celebration in May. From Community Day to Carb Day to the 500 Festival Parade, there are always fun and exciting things to do during race week.

The race takes place at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS). The speedway is the largest spectating sporting facility in the world, boasting 250,000 permanent seats. If you lined up all the seats end to end it would be almost 100 miles long. The track itself is two and a half miles around. Yankee Stadium, Churchill Downs and the Vatican can all fit inside the 253 acre oval. The total grounds of the IMS cover more than 1,000 acres. Inside the oval you'll find the Hall of Fame Museum as well as four holes of the Brickyard Crossing Golf Course.

There have been many history-making events during the first 100 years of racing. With this year marking the beginning of a new century, there is room for even more history to be made. Will a woman win the race for the first time? Will Helio Castroneves join the elite group of four-time winners? Tune in Sunday, May 27, to find out!

Gas prices are increasing but you can save money by getting better mileage on your car this summer!

• Coast to a stop. Whenever possible, anticipate that a light will turn red and ease off the gas. Generally, the less you have to brake, the better the fuel economy.

• Monitor tire pressure. Low tire pressure increases rolling resistance.

• Use the AC at higher speeds. When traveling at speeds over 60 mph, keeping windows closed reduces the aerodynamic drag and burns less fuel.

• Empty the trunk. For every 100 pounds, fuel economy is reduced by 2%.

• Avoid quick acceleration. Quick accelerations can lower your gas mileage by 33% since engines require the most fuel when accelerating from a full stop.
