Sagamore Offers Assistance to Alabama Relief Efforts

Your partners at Sagamore Insurance Company have been deeply saddened by the devastation caused during the recent tornadoes and severe weather that tore through the southeast. Our thoughts and prayers are with our business partners, friends and all Americans who have been affected by this disaster.

The storms caused destruction across Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee and Virginia. The state of Alabama endured the most extreme loss, with a death toll of approximately 235 people, a number that is still being revised as search and rescue efforts continue. Hundreds more were injured, and thousands have been displaced from homes, workplaces and schools. Power outages in some cities lasted for days.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, 312 tornadoes touched down in this region during the week of April 25, 2011; 226 in just one day. This storm system has been identified as the second deadliest tornado outbreak in U.S. history, following a March 1925 storm in which 747 people were killed by tornadoes throughout Missouri, Illinois and Indiana.

The damage caused by these storms is expected to approach $2 billion in insured property in Alabama, where 38 of its 67 counties were declared as disaster areas. In addition, the state’s economy will be affected in the short term by the lack of revenue resulting from income loss, business loss, property damage and loss of sales tax revenue. President Obama has pledged federal aid to assist in the recovery efforts, which is expected to reduce the financial impact on the state to some extent.

As a means of offering assistance to those in need, Sagamore will donate $1 to the American Red Cross relief efforts for each Personal Auto or Small Fleet Trucking policy written in Alabama until July 15, 2011.

Through volunteers and employees, the American Red Cross provides food, clothing, shelter, medicine and other basic needs to families and individuals impacted by disasters. An average of 91 cents of every dollar the Red Cross spends is invested in their humanitarian services and programs. The Red Cross is not a government agency; it relies on donations of time, money and blood to do its work. In the month of April, the Red Cross provided food and a safe place to stay for thousands of people, serving more than 300,000 meals and snacks, and opening 94 shelters across the country.

By partnering with Sagamore, you will help us support the rebuilding of the cities and communities impacted by this disaster.
